Some BIG Rachael Dean Photography News! | Virginia Portrait and Wedding Photographer

Alright, y'all, I know that it's been pretty quiet on the home front since my recent return from our epic worldwide adventure, and you're getting antsy for some updates and new photos. Well, friends, the wait is over, and I'm breaking my radio silence with some big news:

Rachael Dean Photography is relocating to Virginia Beach!

As sad as I was leaving the wonderful clients that have become like friends here in the D.C. area, I am excited to make a new home in Virginia Beach. I found out while living on the beach in New Zealand that it's quite a relaxed and laid back way of life, and I'm pretty pumped to get some quality beach and water photography under my belt! And of course, I'm also stoked to get to know all the beautiful families of Virginia Beach -- and help them capture some great memories!

To help spread the word about my relocation, I am offering a limited-time referral bonus to current clients - from now through June 30:

  • Refer a new client in Virginia Beach to me, and receive a FREE desk print (8x10 or smaller) of your choice from any of your past sessions!
  • To top it off, if your referral books a session with me, they will also receive a FREE desk print (8x10 or smaller) of choice from their session!
So help me spread the word about my big move -- and I'll help you decorate a little bit of your family room, living room, or even your office desk!

Uva | Allegany HS Senior | VA & MD Senior Portrait Photographer

I had the pleasure of photographing Uva's senior portraits on Sunday evening! We got REALLY lucky and were able to squeeze the session in before Hurricane Sandy intensified the rain and wind, which is all the better since Uva wanted her session to capture the beautiful fall colors in western Maryland! If we had rescheduled, Hurricane Sandy surely would have stripped the last remaining leaves from their branches and we would have been left with twigs for her backdrop.

Despite the impending rain and wind, Uva and I had a great time. We braved the elements (you can see the rain starting in her final photo below!) and found some gorgeous backdrops full of the rich fall colors.  I really enjoyed getting to know Uva a little more as we chatted through her session. She's got ambitious plans that include following her mother's footsteps through med school -- and beyond. I know she's got the smarts to make it, and she proved during our session she can really endure anything that's thrown at her. I can't wait see her develop into the talented and successful doctor I know she'll be!

Addie | Allegany HS Senior | MD & VA Senior Portrait Photographer

I'd like to introduce my second senior rep for the class of 2013: Addie! Like Chantel, I've known Addie's family for a long time, and have been so excited for her session. We had a beautiful day in Cumberland for Addie's session -- a welcome change from this summer's pattern! I had a great time walking around with Addie, scouting out locations that fit her style and talking about her plans for her senior year. She wants to major in elementary education, and I can't think of a better fit for such a sweet and patient girl! Here's a sneak peek into our session:

Chantel | Allegany HS Senior | MD & VA Senior Photographer

I'd like to introduce to you my first senior rep for the class of 2013: Chantel! I have been particularly excited for this session, because I have known Chantel since she was a little toddler -- our brothers played on the same baseball teams growing up. Fast forward about 15 years (time flies!), and now she is embarking on her senior year in high school, talking about where she's applying to college and what it's like to rule the school. I was absolutely thrilled and honored when she asked to be part of my 2013 program!

There seems to be a theme emerging from most of my sessions this summer: we got lucky with the weather! This time around, the weather had been bleak all day. Cloudy, rain showers, occasional thunder; I suppose it was typical late summer weather. It really seemed like we wouldn't catch a break and would have to reschedule. But our prayers desperate pleas were heard, and the rain cleared out! We had an excellent evening and found some great locations around Cumberland for Chantel's session. Here's a peek into what a senior session with me is like!

*If you're interested in becoming your school's representative for the class of 2013, contact me for details at info@rachaeldeanphotography.com. I'd love to meet you!

What to Wear? | Wardrobe Tips for Spring Portraits

"Help! What do I wear to my session?"

This is one of the most frequent questions I get when planning a session with a client, and rightly so! Knowing that results of your portrait sessions will most likely be distributed to friends and family through prints, holiday cards, and even Facebook, you want to look your best. Since wardrobe choice is such a large part of looking your best on the day of your session, I thought I'd write a post to shed some light on the subject. I'm tackling spring wardrobes in this post, but you can apply the basic guidelines to any season.

Spring colors are a fresh and fun update to the drab, dark colors of winter. While I know it is tempting to pull out every bright, smiley shirt in your wardrobe, you will want to keep your clothes classic and simple for your spring portraits. These photos will be kept for years to come, and classic styling (as the name suggests) is timeless. You want your portraits to showcase you, not your clothing!

I suggest wearing solid, neutral colors, and keeping the colors in a single hue for each outfit. As a rule, I also discourage heavy patterns for portraits, as they shift the focus to what you’re wearing instead of you. A better way to add dimension to your portrait wardrobe is layering – think about a patterned shirt under a solid jacket, or adding a scarf for a punch of color. A neutral-toned outfit with just a pop of color or pattern goes a long way to show off your personality in a portrait.

For groups and family sessions, coordinate your colors for a more unified look. I suggest picking one color – say, green or navy blue – and coordinating your outfits around various shades in that color family. Again, patterns should be kept to a minimum with groups. If you do go with patterns, they should also coordinate throughout the group and be in the same color family. In the spring, neutral earth tones like navy, khaki, and brown pair well with brighter colors like light blue, white, yellow, and even light gray for groups.
I hope that these tips help as you prepare for your spring sessions. As always, if you have more questions, feel free to contact me!

Grace's Senior Portraits

I had a great time shooting with Grace! She was a hilarious partner to work with and had a huge smile on her face the whole time. Her bubbly personality definitely shines through in her portraits. There are so many good ones, I couldn't pick just a few to show!
