Presenting: Fall Mini-Session Marathon Days! | Northern Virginia Portrait Photographer

I'm so excited to announce my fall mini-session marathon days! I decided to go with two separate locations this year: Brookside Gardens and Lewinsville Park. I think that both locations will provide beautiful fall photo backdrops, but will also have their own distinct looks!

I have scheduled two days this fall to provide 30-minute mini-sessions:

  • On September 29, I'll be at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD. These gardens are gorgeous! There are so many wonderful backdrop options at Brookside that I feel like a kid in a candy store when I'm shooting there.

  • On November 4, I'll be at Lewinsville Park in McLean, VA. Although park is known to many in this area for its soccer and baseball fields, there is a spectacular historic house on the park grounds, and its overgrown fields make for a great fall photo backdrop.

Each day will have 4 session times available. If you're interested in reserving a session time on one of these days, contact me via the "Book with Me" button above!

Addie | Allegany HS Senior | MD & VA Senior Portrait Photographer

I'd like to introduce my second senior rep for the class of 2013: Addie! Like Chantel, I've known Addie's family for a long time, and have been so excited for her session. We had a beautiful day in Cumberland for Addie's session -- a welcome change from this summer's pattern! I had a great time walking around with Addie, scouting out locations that fit her style and talking about her plans for her senior year. She wants to major in elementary education, and I can't think of a better fit for such a sweet and patient girl! Here's a sneak peek into our session:

Chantel | Allegany HS Senior | MD & VA Senior Photographer

I'd like to introduce to you my first senior rep for the class of 2013: Chantel! I have been particularly excited for this session, because I have known Chantel since she was a little toddler -- our brothers played on the same baseball teams growing up. Fast forward about 15 years (time flies!), and now she is embarking on her senior year in high school, talking about where she's applying to college and what it's like to rule the school. I was absolutely thrilled and honored when she asked to be part of my 2013 program!

There seems to be a theme emerging from most of my sessions this summer: we got lucky with the weather! This time around, the weather had been bleak all day. Cloudy, rain showers, occasional thunder; I suppose it was typical late summer weather. It really seemed like we wouldn't catch a break and would have to reschedule. But our prayers desperate pleas were heard, and the rain cleared out! We had an excellent evening and found some great locations around Cumberland for Chantel's session. Here's a peek into what a senior session with me is like!

*If you're interested in becoming your school's representative for the class of 2013, contact me for details at info@rachaeldeanphotography.com. I'd love to meet you!

James and Jake | Arlington, VA Family Photographer

I had a great time yesterday morning with little James and his older brother, Jake! These two guys have a TON of spunk and personality. Jake really took charge of the session and showed his little brother how to have a good time in front of the camera. He had a huge array of silly faces and even employed some tickling to get James to break into that big, beautiful smile you can see below. In the spirit of true brotherly love, Jake even shared some of this favorite action figures with James! Here's a peek into our fun-fille session:

Watching Planes at Gravelly Point | Arlington, VA Photographer

While living so close to D.C. has some drawbacks (permanent rush hour, anyone??), there are also so many cool things to do! As the nation's capital, it's a rich city for history buffs and museum seekers. But underneath the touristy shine lives a real city, full of fun places to explore and new paths to tread.

One of my favorite things to do in D.C. is right in my own backyard of Arlington! On a beautiful balmy night, when the wind is just right, I love to go to Gravelly Point Park, sit at the end of the runway a Reagan National Airport, and watch the planes land. My husband, an aviation buff, first introduced me to this experience on one of our first dates. I'll have admit that I was a little apprehensive about the whole thing at first. I mean, sitting at the end of a runway with jets flying a few hundred feet overhead did not sound all that amazing; in fact, it sounded downright dangerous!

I WAS SO WRONG! The difficult landing at Reagan requires great skill and finesse from the pilots, and it's thrilling to be so close to a plane during the final moments of its descent. You can feel -- and hear -- the wake turbulence that the plane creates as it whips through the air towards its final destination.

But of course, the real reason I love this activity is that it makes for some unique photos! As you can see below, the size of the planes really puts everything into perspective. Here's my husband as a jet flies by us in its approach to the runway.

If you haven't done this yet, I highly recommend it. It's a free and fun way to spend an evening!
